My dad, mom, sister, and I took a road trip up to the Northeast to view the 2024 solar eclipse.

The 2024 solar eclipse was a major event for many areas in North America, and Newport, Vermont, was located along the path of totality, making it an excellent location to experience this rare astronomical phenomenon. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse occurred, with the moon completely covering the sun for a few minutes, creating a spectacular sight in the sky.

In Newport, residents and visitors witnessed the complete darkness of the total eclipse, as the moon blocked the sun’s light. This lasted for a few minutes, during which the day briefly turned to night, and the solar corona (the outer atmosphere of the sun) became visible. Before and after totality, there were partial phases of the eclipse, where the moon gradually covered and uncovered the sun.

Newport, Vermont, is a smaller, scenic town near Lake Memphremagog, and the area’s relatively low light pollution and wide open spaces made it a prime spot for viewing the eclipse. The event attracted eclipse chasers and tourists to the area, and local businesses saw a boost in visitors. Special events, educational programs, and viewing parties were organized to help people safely experience the eclipse, as looking directly at the sun without protection can cause serious eye damage.

For the best viewing experience, many used proper eclipse glasses or solar viewers.
